Battling Rovers Lose

Bristol Rovers
0 - 2
Gillingham

The Memorial Stadium

5 Jan 2013

Attendance: 6,088

Referee:

Manager John Ward handed a debut to new signing Mark McChrystal and also recalled striker Eliot Richards to the starting line up in place of QPR striker Tom Hitchcock.

Two first half goals were enough to hand John Ward his first defeat as Rovers Manager since he returned. It was just 3 minutes in when Whelpdale was given room to turn inside the box and lashed an unstoppable right-footed shot into the top corner from 15 yards. Rovers were battling hard and were unlucky when John Joe O'Toole hit the post. Rovers were unlucky to go 2-0 down, Deon Burton lifted the ball over Gary Kenneth and volleyed home.

Gary Kenneth and Joe Anyinsah both could not return for the second half due to injury. Rovers had a lot of possession in the second half but looked light up top and could not turn their possession in to goals. After yesterday's defeat Rovers dropped back to bottom of the football league. Rovers do look a more solid outfit under Ward but the need for a striker is clear, something that Ward has said he will try to address this week.

Once again the support was fantastic, well done Gasheads.
